29 March 2012: During his recent visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighted the role of both North-South and South-South cooperation in pursuing balanced development across the world, noting the particular importance of the South-South flow for development assistance.
In an interview to The Jakarta Post, Ban called on the emerging world powers to play a greater role in providing economic cooperation, stressing that he sees sustainable development as a top priority during his second term as head of the UN. Highlighting the themes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), he said that “every country should have some policy space to address and realize green economy pacts where the low-carbon economy, inclusive development dialogue, and equality issues can be addressed.” He added that energy would be a cross-cutting issue, as it can provide the most important tools for addressing a series of issues related to climate change and the food crisis.
