© UN16 June 2009: In a video message to the second session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 16-19 June 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighted that risk reduction is an investment and a first line of defense in adapting to climate change that will pay dividends.

He stressed the link between the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 with a new climate agreement, noting that a triple win could be achieved – against poverty, disasters and climate change – and challenged delegates to set the target to reduce loss of life from disasters by half by 2015.
The Global Platform is the main biennial forum on disaster risk reduction bringing together a wide cross-section of the world’s disaster risk reduction community and is organized by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Secretariat. Its second session will be carbon neutral, in line with the “Greening the UN” initiative, which aims at climate neutrality.
