UN Secretary-General Calls on Businesses to Apply Sustainability Principles

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said private businesses must strengthen their efforts to integrate sustainability principles into their operations, as well as build on the commitments made during Rio+20, and that businesses working on projects for the common good can benefit their profits.

Ban also highlighted the role of the UN Global Compact initiative.

Ban was addressing the annual meeting of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

31 October 2012: Addressing the annual meeting of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that private businesses must strengthen their efforts to integrate sustainability principles into their operations, as well as build on the commitments made during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Ban also underscored the importance of the business community and governments, recognizing that working on projects for the common good also benefits companies’ profits. He highlighted the UN Global Compact initiative, whose members have committed to integrate universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption into their operations.
