7 December 2011: Speaking at a side-event held during the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for support to REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries).
Ban underscored that public-private partnerships are essential for implementing REDD+, including by bolstering local communities and smallholder farmers, respecting the rights of indigenous people, empowering women and reducing poverty. He urged countries to increase financing for REDD+.
