24 September 2009: In a message to the high-level event on “Peace and Security through Women’s Leadership: Acting on 1325 and Climate Change,” organized in New York by Finland and Liberia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on UN member States to give women a greater say in addressing climate change challenges as equal partners in global discussions.
Secretary-General Ban noted that women must be seen as agents of progress and not as victims, adding that UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) offers a model for action. Stressing that women are custodians of knowledge, with unique information on how to sustainably manage natural resources, he underlined that they are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
