1 March 2011: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed the Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Julia Marton-Lefèvre, to the Board of the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative, which encourages business to adopt sustainable and socially-responsible policies.

The UN Global Compact, created in 2000, sets ten principles with universal consensus in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption. The Global Compact Board was created in 2006 to provide strategic and policy advice for the initiative. The Board is the UN’s highest-ranking advisory body involving business and civil society, and it is chaired by the UN Secretary-General.

Marton-Lefèvre noted that the private sector is an important driver of change and an integral part of solutions to conservation challenges. She was one of six new members of the Board, which now has 22 members representing business, civil society, employment and the UN. The appointments followed the recommendations made by the Board’s Nominations Committee. [IUCN News Release] [UN Global Compact Press Release]
