23 October 2008: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN
Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Kemal Dervis participated in an
informal discussion with five eminent economists at UN Headquarters in New
York, US, on 23 October 2008. The talks focused on the global financial crisis
and its expected impact on efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The participating economists were Joseph Stiglitz (Columbia University),
Kenneth Rogoff (Harvard University), Dani Rodrik (Harvard University), Nancy
Birdsall (Centre for Global Development), and Jeffrey Sachs (Columbia
University). Participants also discussed the 15 November meeting of world
leaders to be hosted by US President Bush, and the Financing for Development
Review Conference, which will take place in Doha, Qatar, at the end of
November. The financial crisis will also be discussed at the regular meeting of
the Chief Executives Board (CEB) on 24 October 2008. [UN
