UN Secretary-General Addresses World Energy Congress
story highlights

The Congress, organized around the theme "responding now to global challenges" addressed clean energy policies and funding.

16 September 2010: The 21st World Energy Congress took place from 12-16 September 2010, in Montreal, Canada.

In a video message delivered on 12 September to the Congress, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that “we will not beat the climate challenge until clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency provide a firm foundation for our energy needs.” He referred to the targets identified by the High-Level Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change, namely universal energy access and a 40% increase in energy efficiency by 2030. He called on the participants at the World Energy Congress to contribute their expertise, capacity for research, advocacy and action to help reach these targets, and create a sustainable energy future. During the week, Congress participants addressed, inter alia: the increase in renewable energy investments; the need for industry and governments to collaborate on funding efficient energy policies; and the move towards sustainable green policy.
