UN Officials Explore Education in Post-2015 Agenda

norragOctober 2013: Officials from several UN bodies have contributed to a publication titled ‘Education and Development in the Post-2015 Landscapes.’ The latest news issue from the Network for International Politics and Cooperation in Education and Training (NORRAG) includes reflections on the Education For All (EFA) Initiative and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and summaries of national consultations on the post-2015 development agenda.

Qian Teng, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), reports on UNESCO and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) global consultations to identify a universal education goal and global priority areas and targets. The consultation proposed ‘Equitable, Quality Education and Lifelong Learning for All’ as the overarching goal. Teng recommends that the post-2015 education agenda address contemporary challenges, including attitudes, competencies, skills and values required for the future, and how education processes and policies can facilitate their acquisition.

Reflecting on the UN High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP), Michael Anderson, Special Envoy to HLP Co-Chair David Cameron, described the Panel’s agreement to focus on education access and quality learning, including meeting minimum standards in literacy and numeracy, and promoting life-long learning.
