UN Invites Nominations of Indigenous Representatives

The UN is calling on indigenous peoples' organizations to nominate representatives to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII), for the term 2017-2019.

The UN established the PFII in response to demands from indigenous peoples for a high-level permanent body.

The Forum provides advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other UN bodies.

Unpfii216 September 2015: The UN is calling on indigenous peoples’ organizations to nominate representatives to the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII), for the term 2017-2019. The UN established the PFII in response to demands from indigenous peoples for a high-level permanent body. The Forum provides advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other UN bodies.

The Forum is one of three UN bodies mandated to deal with indigenous peoples’ issues. The other two bodies are the Expert Mechanisms on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights on Indigenous Peoples. The Forum meets at annual two-week sessions in New York.

Nominating organisations should send the PFII Secretariat a formal letter of nomination, a resume of their preferred candidate, and information about their organization. The deadline for submissions of nominations is 1 February 2016. [Call for Nominations] [PFII Website]
