UN-HABITAT Workshops Engage Citizens on Urbanization Issues

A series of workshops in nine Cape Verde municipalities aimed to engage and empower citizens on urban development and territorial planning, as part of the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme.

UN-HABITAT20 July 2012: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Cape Verde Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territory Planning (MAHOT) organized a series of workshops on urban development and territorial planning for citizens of Cape Verde. The workshops were part of the larger Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP). Workshop and other PSUP activities included individual and institutional capacity building, information gathering and training.

The workshops took place in nine municipalities from 16-25 July 2012: Praia; Ribeira Grande de Santiago; Tarrafal de Santiago; Assomada; São Miguel; São Lourenço dos Órgãos; São Domingos; São Salvador do Mundo; and Santa Cruz.

Participants included academics, community groups, civil society, government and UN officials, and the private sector. [UN-HABITAT Press Release]
