fao-undp-unhabitat11 December 2013: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) have jointly initiated a pilot program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to test integrated land tenure as a means to advance peace and social cohesion in the country.

Funded by the Netherlands, the program seeks to promote agricultural production and socio-economic development through activities that improve access to secure and sustainable land resources. Community participation has already been used to identify and implement various activities, such as training in carpentry, craft soap formation, cutting and sewing, hairdressing and beauty, baking, masonry, manufacturing ‘tshikudu’ and improved stoves.

The pilot project will be evaluated with a view to replicating such integrated land security initiatives in other areas of the country. [UN-HABITAT Press Release]
