Teaching sustainable urban development 12 August 2008: A two-week course on Sustainable Communities has commenced in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together 28 urban professionals representing academia, NGOs, local
authorities and central government agencies from 15 African and Asian
countries.

This is the second time that the course, which is funded by the
Government of Finland and coordinated by the Helsinki University of Technology
in collaboration with UN-HABITAT and the UN Environment Programme, is being
run. It aims to provide professionals with an overview of current thinking and
examples on how to use city planning as a tool for sustainable development. The
topics to be addressed during the course include: transportation and energy;
risk and vulnerability reduction; and urban planning and sustainability. The
course contributes to the implementation of UN-HABITAT’s new medium term
strategic plan to strengthen education for sustainable urbanization. [UN
