18 October 2010: At the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the People Committee of Hanoi, the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association, and the University of Hawaii’s Globalization Research Center organized a conference titled “Hanoi Millennium: City Past and Future,” from 12-13 October 2010.

The conference addressed strategies to transform Hanoi in a sustainable city, making it more resilient to natural disasters while ensuring that the cultural aspects are preserved in the modernization process. The conference also aimed to inform the finalization of the Master Plan for Hanoi up to 2030, which aims to, inter alia: develop the Red River and the Hanoi-Haiphong corridor; provide urban infrastructure and services including a well-functioning transportation system; and address the potential impacts of climate-related disasters, particularly on the urban poor and vulnerable groups.

A number of thematic panels were held during the conference, including on climate change and sustainable urban development, and environment and city region. [UN-HABITAT Press Release]
