8 March 2012: The UN Greening the Blue Campaign has spotlighted green initiatives at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and UN Mission in Kosovo.

Under the FAO initiative, staff at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, are being encouraged to use organic waste bins to reduce the estimated 700,000 kilograms of waste FAO headquarters throws away every year. Waste placed in the organic bins is processed and turned into compost, which is then used by farmers on their fields, thereby contributing directly to agriculture and food production.

In Kosovo, the UN Mission is collecting bottle caps, in partnership with an initiative initiated by students at the American University of Kosovo, under an initiative which turns 250 kilograms of bottle caps into a wheelchair. The collected caps will be sent to Turkey and traded with a recycling company for wheelchairs, which will then be sent back to Kosovo and distributed to families in need of wheelchairs.
