19 March 2012: The UN has announced that it is instituting a PaperSmart Model at the intersessional meeting for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and the 2012 Regular Session of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The PaperSmart Model is an initiative of the Integrated Sustainable PaperSmart Services (ISPS) Secretariat, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The model provides meeting information using four different methods, as follows: the ISPS Portal; ISPS Media, receiving information on CD-ROMs; ISPS e-Publish, which caters to delegations using laptops or mobile devices; and conventional hard copy. PaperSmart aims to improve sustainability, efficiency, accessibility and knowledge management.

Preparations are also under way for servicing the Rio+20 Conference in the PaperSmart format. The Papersmart portal also includes “Road to Rio,” an interactive feature allowing delegates to search and browse resolutions and texts relating to sustainable development from 1968 to date.
