story highlights

The November 2011 issue of the UN Global Compact Bulletin describes its submission to the Compilation Document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which urges governments to support corporate responsibility, suggesting that with the right incentives, enabling environments and means of implementation, the private sector can contribute to sustainable development.

November 2011: In the latest issue of the UN Global Compact’s Bulletin, a series of articles describes activities leading up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The Bulletin highlights actions recommended for governments to strengthen the corporate contribution to sustainable development. In that regard, the UN Global Compact Office submitted a document entitled “Corporate Sustainability Leadership: A framework for Action at Rio+20 and Beyond” as an input to the UNCSD Compilation Document. In its submission, the Global Compact urges governments to support corporate responsibility, suggesting that with the right incentives, enabling environments and means of implementation, the private sector can contribute to sustainable development.

The Bulletin also highlights the UN Secretary-General’s message urging private sector innovation, and features: challenges and opportunities for an anti-corruption working group discussion; the European Commission’s new strategy for corporate social responsibility; the launch of a local network in Iraq as well as meetings of networks in Europe and Brazil; and a number of resources for the Rio+20 preparatory process, such as new topics launched in the Human Rights and Business dilemmas forum; and the report of the UN Private Sector Forum on Sustainable Energy for All.
