11 April 2012: UN Global Compact has appointed WindMade as its Sustainability Partner of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Corporate Sustainability Forum.

WindMade, the world’s first global consumer label for companies, events and products using wind power, was chosen for the role of Sustainability Partner to ensure that the environmental impact of the Forum is minimized through all phases of planning and execution. This will include procuring wind power for 100 percent of the Forum’s electricity footprint, making it the first ever UN event to be labelled WindMade. Reduction of waste, use of sustainable materials and recycling of products are some of the other goals. Participants at the Forum will also be encouraged to contribute to offsetting the carbon emissions related to their participation and travel.

Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, emphasized that people should remember the Forum as advancing sustainable development around the world, rather than for its environmental footprint. The Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum aims to strengthen the business contribution to sustainable development globally. [UN Global Compact News]
