UN Forum Encourages Cooperation for 2030 Agenda in Central Asia

The Economic Forum of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) concluded that sub-regional cooperation is important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In addition, according to the Forum, regional cooperation in water, environment, trade and transport are a precondition for success.

The Forum adopted a declaration on ‘Paving the way for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the SPECA region,' outlining implementation and monitoring of progress towards the SDGs.

UNECE11 November 2015: The Economic Forum of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) concluded that sub-regional cooperation is important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, according to the Forum, regional cooperation in water, environment, trade and transport are a precondition for success. The Forum adopted a declaration, titled ‘Paving the way for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the SPECA region,’ which outlines implementation and monitoring of progress towards the SDGs.

The Forum and Governing Council of SPECA took place from 10-11 November 2015, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Close to 100 participants were present, including several UN agencies, civil society and private sector representatives.

Participants presented country plans for the achievement of the SDGs and discussed opportunities for regional partnerships.

The SPECA Governing Council declaration, adopted at the Forum, encourages partners to cooperate within the region as well as with UN agencies to achieve the SDGs.
