June 2010: The UN team in Brussels has released the fifth annual report on the achievements of its partnership with the EU in 2009, titled “Improving Lives.”
The report describes joint achievements of the two organizations in the areas of humanitarian assistance, recovery from conflict and natural disaster, crises prevention, hunger and food insecurity, essential social services, democracy, sustainable development, economic opportunities and decent work. Joint UN-EU work on climate change in 2009 included: training of senior country-level staff of both institutions on climate change implications for development; support to the development of Afghanistan’s national adaptation plan; and support in Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan for regional climate risk reduction in the Himalayas, to reduce risks faced by mountain communities from floods caused by glacial lake outbursts and mitigate the impact of climatic hazards.
