28 April 2010: In conjunction with the launch of the report of the Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UN-Energy published two reports comprising strategic reviews of its past, present and future work.
The first, “Delivering on Energy: An Overview of Activities by UN-Energy and its Members,” presents information on work carried out by UN-Energy in 2008-2009. The report discusses 40 energy-related programmes of its 22 partners, spanning the three thematic areas of energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency. It closes with a literature review of UN-Energy-related documents.
The companion report, “UN-Energy – Looking to the Future,” although not intended to be a recommendation or a vision statement, reviews progress thus far and presents three short-term future scenarios that would continue UN-Energy’s organizational evolution into a “respected advisory group with a visible and credible role in orienting global energy discourse.” The report outlines a number of actions aimed at strengthening UN-Energy’s UN-wide coordination abilities, including: updating and refining its terms of reference; creating a clear communication strategy applicable to the broadest range of stakeholders possible; creating a secretariat; formulating a clear and strong vision statement; articulating a 3-5 year plan of work; and renewing its organizational mandate from the UN or other intergovernmental body.
