UN-Energy Announces Public-Private Partnership on Motor-Systems Efficiency Indicators
story highlights

The initiative, established by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), will focus on developing energy efficiency indicators for motor systems to support indicator-based monitoring and benchmarking, with a goal of achieving 30% energy efficiency gains in the industrial sector.

UNIDO1 November 2012: UN-Energy has announced the establishment of a new public-private partnership (PPP) by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), which will focus on developing motor-systems efficiency indicators to support the deployment of industrial energy efficiency policies and measures.

The new initiative aims to unleash opportunities in the industrial sector to achieve up to 30% energy efficiency gains in motor-driven systems by promoting the use of indicator-based systems for monitoring and benchmarking performance and progress, at both the industry and country/regional level. The PPP builds on several existing initiatives, including UNIDO projects on motor systems indicators in China and the implementation in 11 developing countries of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 50001 standard on energy management, and work on indicator development by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Improving Policies through Energy Efficiency Indicators (IPEEI) initiative of the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC).

The PPP was launched in support of the UN Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, which aims, by 2030 to: ensure universal access to modern energy services; double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
