18 June 2009: The UN Department of Public Information (DPI) with the Department of Nongovernmental Relations held a briefing on the Ozone Layer and Climate Change, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 18 June.

The briefing highlighted the achievements to protect the ozone layer and prevent climate change, including the success of the Montreal Protocol in phasing out over 96% of all ozone depleting substances (ODS), especially hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), the most widely used ODS, thus preventing their potentially harmful effects to the climate. The briefing also outlined the obstacles that remain to be addressed by the global community, particularly at the UN Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December this year.
