She underscored that the world is facing crises related to food, climate, energy and poverty, but underlined the role that the UN can play in bringing humanity together to help forge partnerships to “set the world on a new path to food security” and fight climate change. She also stressed that the economic, food and climate crises indicate that the world is going through a “development emergency,” but noted that there is reason for hope. She concluded by noting that in 2010 the world will have the opportunity to assess progress on the Millennium Development Goals and underscored the importance of an effective multilateral system to deliver results, stressing the relevance of the framework provided by the UN.
