The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will be administering a $39.2 million grant from the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to support the adoption of sustainable farming methods in Brazil.
5 April 2013: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will be administering a $39.2 million grant from the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to support the adoption of sustainable farming methods in Brazil.
The grant will be used to work with smallholder and medium-sized farms in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest Regions. IDB notes that the majority of Brazilian farmers are smallholders that lack access to technical, credit and purchase assistance. Efforts will focus on training and capacity building around sustainable land use, and the reduction of poverty and vulnerability of rural populations.
Working alongside the Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply Ministry, the project will support low-carbon development and forest restoration. The project aims to reduce and avoid 16 million tons of carbon dioxide over 20 years and will complement Brazil’s Low Carbon Agriculture Plan.
