FAO12 August 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has reported on a forest data mapping project in Uganda. The project, implemented by FAO and the National Forest Authority of Uganda (NFA) and funded by Finland, combines satellite data with open-source processing software and statistical tools to provide better forest and land cover maps.

The project has generated, with limited investment, improvements in forest monitoring and enhanced decision-making in order to reduce forest loss and support forest-based livelihoods. In doing so, the project has overcome challenges associated with limited resources, poor data availability and a lack of coverage. [FAO Press Release]
