October 2008: The Third Global Congress of Women in Politics
and Governance will convene in Manila, Philippines, from 19-22 October 2008,
with a focus on gender in climate change and disaster risk reduction.

The
Congress is organized by Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics, in
partnership with the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction
(UN/ISDR), the UN Development Programme, the UN Environment Programme, and the
Women’s Environment and Development Organization. The event is based on the recognition
of the need for political leaders and legislators to commit to creating a
gender responsive enabling environment for responding to climate change and
preparedness through disaster risk reduction at national and international
levels.
Keynote speakers will include Salvano Briceno, Director, UN/ISDR, and
Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary General, UN Conference on Trade and
Development. The Congress will conclude with the adoption of the Manila
Declaration on Gender in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction.
