Thailand Flag19 January 2015: A communication from the Government of Thailand on its Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) explains that the country will voluntarily attempt to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the energy and transportation sectors by 7-20% below business-as-usual (BAU) levels by 2020.

Thailand submitted its NAMA plan in a formal letter to the UNFCCC Secretariat, which announced it is the 58th developing country to do so.

Through its National NAMA, Thailand will focus on: developing alternative and renewable energy sources; improving energy efficiency in buildings, industry, transportation and power generation; increasing biofuel use in transportation; and creating an environmentally-sustainable transport system.

Thailand’s implementation of its NAMAs will depend on international support, the letter states. The Government is seeking finance and capacity building support for preparing and carrying out its NAMAs, as well as assistance in the form of technology transfer and development.

NAMAs, as noted by the Government of Thailand in its communication, take into account national circumstances and are not legally binding in nature. [UNFCCC Press Release] [Formal Letter from Government of Thailand]
