TERI31 March 2015: The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) has organized a workshop on ‘Energy and Environment in the Context of Sustainable Development Goals in India.’ The event, which took place in New Delhi, India, on 31 March 2015, was part of a project on energy and environment of the UK Department for International Development (DFID)-TERI Partnership for Clean Energy Access and Improved Policies for Sustainable Development.

Comprising structured panel discussions on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Indian context, sustainable energy and environmental sustainability, the workshop gathered participants from government, research organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

TERI’s Acting Director-General Leena Srivastava reminded that SDGs are universal and suggested there is “recognition that developed nations should reduce their consumption patterns and improve their overall production efficiency.” On SDG targets, Chandrashekhar Dasgupta, TERI Distinguished Fellow and Member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change, suggested that the differentiation of targets for developed and developing countries should be based on capability and responsibility.

Panelists also called for, inter alia: “ingraining” sustainable development in countries’ development pathways; integrating renewable energy to the grid to ensure electricity access; reducing dependence on fossil fuels and investing more in renewables; improving data collection methodologies; and a reporting framework for tracking progress on environmental goals.

The event also saw the launch of the ‘TERI Energy & Environment Data Diary and Yearbook 2014/15′ report, which presents India’s annual commercial energy balances and includes chapters on SDGs and sustainable energy, as well as a ‘Green Focus’ at the end of each chapter highlighting sustainable initiatives and practices. On the role of renewable energy in meeting India’s growing energy demand, workshop participants noted that decentralized solutions are one option for providing modern energy services in the country.
