TERI Conference Launches SvaGriha Rating System to Encourage Greener Buildings

Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, launched the construction-greening SvaGriha rating system and said a national institution for renewable energy is “in the pipeline.” TERI's Director-General noted that, as the country's building industry expands, it is important to bring about major change based on scientific principles, architectural techniques and methods that “stand the test of time.”

1 March 2012: At the “National Conference on Green Design,” organized by ADaRSH, a platform to facilitate interaction among stakeholders in the sector, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, participants called for a greater push for green buildings as the Indian construction industry continues to grow.

At the two day conference, participants discussed, among other issues, resource optimization for self-sufficiency, sustainability and the city, materials making environmental sense, and innovation in building design and systems.

Officially launching the SvaGriha rating system, which encourages individuals to build greener homes, the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah, said the new system would maximize construction of green buildings in the Delhi-Mumbai Corridor. Acknowledging the importance of renewables in this endeavor, he announced that a national institution for renewable energy is “in the pipeline.” Lauding the new SvaGriha rating system, TERI’s Director-General R.K.
