Sustainable Development, Ending Violence Emphasized on International Women’s Day

The theme for this year's events was "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women." 8 March 2013: The UN system marked International Women’s Day, on 8 March 2013, with events and activities dedicated to the advancement of women around the world. The theme for this year’s events was “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.” Statements by UN representatives and stakeholders recognized a need to act collectively to end violence against women and girls, while highlighting the importance of women to a global sustainable development agenda.

Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighted his dedication to ending sexual violence. He remarked to victims, “the UN stands with you,” and said he prioritized a global push to end such injustice.

Other leaders highlighted the links between women’s empowerment and pursuit of sustainable development. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Director General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), remarked that the safety of women is vital for “economic progress that is equitable.” He also linked access to energy, environmental sustainability, and poverty reduction to enhanced opportunities for women.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) Director General, David Sheppard, highlighted that “sustainable development in the Pacific will not be achieved unless women are fully involved in all aspects of the management of our Pacific environment.” [Statement of UNSG] [UNIDO Statement] [SPREP Statement]
