cgiar_sudan23 October 2015: Sudan has become a contributor to the Multi-donor Trust Fund of the CGIAR Consortium, which finances research carried out by the CGIAR’s 15 international agricultural research centers.

In a press release, the World Bank welcomed Sudan’s decision to become a supporter of the CGIAR Consortium and its research and technology development for improved food security, health and nutrition and sustainable management of natural resources in developing countries.

In 2014, Sudan committed to contribute US$1 million to the CGIAR Fund over two years. The funding is dedicated to research on dryland agricultural systems, which is the research area with highest potential to generate benefits for Sudan’s agricultural sector. The funding will support, among other activities, research on the development and dissemination of improved crop varieties, livestock vaccines and sustainable agroforestry and farming practices.

In 2015, 39 countries and organizations have contributed to the CGIAR Fund, with Sudan and Bangladesh being the only least developed countries among them. [World Bank Press Release] [CGIAR Fund Website]
