SPREP19 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has reported that it is working with the Government of Kiribati to support the development of a joint national action plan for climate change and disaster risk management.

According to SPREP, a Kiribati Joint Implementation Plan (KJIP) will be developed to facilitate the joint implementation of the Kiribati Disaster Risk Management Plan and the National Framework for Climate Change and Climate Change Adaptation Framework.

The process is Government-led, and Kiribati has established a core group of national experts, including representatives from civil society, to development the KJIP. SPREP is providing support to the process by leading a regional team of experts from GIZ, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the Australian Government, through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The KJIP will be completed by late 2013. [SPREP Press Release]
