According to SPREP, the partnership forms part of a larger US$21 million “fast start” finance commitment made by the US for a Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) to address climate change.
SPREP says the partnership will be focused on strengthening the capacity of the countries and communities in the Pacific Islands to improve food security and water security, and to protect critical ecosystems.
8 September 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has announced that it, along with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the US Government, have initiated a partnership to advance climate change adaptation.
According to SPREP, the partnership forms part of a larger US$21 million “fast start” finance commitment made by the US for a Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) to address climate change. SPREP says the partnership will be focused on strengthening the capacity of the countries and communities in the Pacific Islands to improve food security and water security, and to protect critical ecosystems. In addition, the partnership will assist countries in accessing information about climate impacts, enabling them to make more effective and sustainable decisions in the face of climate change.
According to SPREP, the US also announced it will manage the US$21 million “fast start” program through a US Agency for International Development project office based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. [SPREP Press release] [SPC Press release]
