SPREP Launches South Pacific Ocean Ecosystem Analysis Project

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Education, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the French Institute of Research for Development, will also be involved.

SPREP25 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has launched the South Pacific Ocean Ecosystem Analysis project (PACIOCEA), which aims to enhance local and regional capacity for improving conservation and sustainable ocean management through marine spatial planning.

According to SPREP, the project is funded by the European Union, managed by the French MPA Agency (Agence des Aires Marines Protégées), and coordinated by SPREP. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Education, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the French Institute of Research for Development, will also be involved.

SPREP says the two-year PACIOCEA is in line with the priorities of the Pacific Oceanscape Framework, which envisions a secure future for Pacific Island Countries and Territories through the sustainable development, management and conservation of the Pacific Ocean.
