SPC Works to Improve Internet Governance and ICT Support in Pacific

A recent meeting in New Caledonia resulted in agreement between SPC and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to collaborate in: promoting information communication and technology (ICT) infrastructure development across the region and local industry; ICT human capacity building; cybersecurity; emergency communications; and new strategies to connect the unconnected.

19 April 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) convened the inaugural meeting of Pacific Internet Governance Forum (Pacific IGF) in Noumea, New Caledonia, from 9-10 April 2011. The meeting aimed to explore ways in which the internet can benefit Pacific communities and how the associated risks and challenges can be best addressed.

The meeting resulted in an agreement between SPC and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to collaborate in: promoting information communication and technology (ICT) infrastructure development across the region and local industry; ICT human capacity building; cybersecurity; emergency communications; and new strategies to connect the unconnected.

SPC’s other recent activities on ICT include a partnership with the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) to increase cooperation on internet-related issues, particularly on IP addresses. SPC also announced it is working with Netsafe to further enhance cooperation and the effectiveness of cybersafety programmes.
