SPC Details 2011 Expansion at CRGA Meeting

28 October 2010: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) announced details of its planned expansion during the 40th meeting of the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA), SPC’s governing body, which currently is convening in Noumea, New Caledonia. Beginning in January 2011, two regional organisations (Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) and South Pacific Board for Educational Assessment (SPBEA)) will be fully integrated into SPC.

According to SPC, the merging of SOPAC and SPBEA into SPC is the result of decisions taken by Pacific Forum leaders to reform the regional institutional framework, with a view toward achieving greater efficiency and effectiveness in delivering services to members. SPC outlined projected milestones for the organization in 2011, including: the continued full and effective delivery of all existing SPC services as well as all services transferring from other organizations to SPC; optimal corporate, programme support and information and communication technology (ICT) services to support the expanded organization; finalization of the SPC long-term sustainable financing strategy; and the review and updating of the organization’s legal and strategic documents, including the Tahiti Nui declaration and the SPC corporate plan 2007-2012.
