RamsarNovember 2013: Participants supported the water-food-energy nexus approach at the ‘International Roundtable on Water and Energy Nexus in Transboundary Basins in Southeastern Europe.’ Participants recognized the potential of such an approach for integrating land and water use planning across river basins, noting wetlands serve as a connecting element across water, food and energy.

Participants also discussed: mapping linkages between water and energy in Southeastern Europe; addressing tradeoffs between water ecosystem needs and other uses, such as agriculture, hydropower and tourism; securing hydropower sustainability; and sharing long-term benefits. Following presentations on tools for assessing economic, environmental and energy values and tradeoffs, participants applied the tools to assess energy, land and water use in the Sava river basin and to consider the potential impacts of increased agriculture, industrialization and urbanization on the river basin.

Over 70 participants attended the roundtable, which took place from 6-8 November 2013 in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. [Ramsar Press Release]
