22 January 2013: The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), in partnership with the non-governmental organization (NGO) Vietnam Association for the Conservation of Nature (VACNE), and with funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), has launched a project to strengthen the resilience of farmers to climate change in the Mekong and Red River deltas of Viet Nam.

The project, which will synthesize international research with field information, and improve knowledge and documentation of climate change impacts in the deltas, aims to increase resilience by raising awareness among farmers and building the capacities of water management practitioners in government agencies to address climate change.

The project’s Inception Workshop, which took place from 22-23 January 2013, in Hanoi, Viet Nam, highlighted preliminary findings of the project on current impacts of, and adaptation measures to climate change in Viet Nam. Workshop participants also discussed the project’s priorities. According to SIWI, pilot projects, in which farmers will gather information on hydro-climactic hazards and local responses, will begin in 2013 in one province in the Mekong Delta, Vinh Long, and two in the Red River Delta, Ha Nam and Thai Binh.
