February 2011: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), Division for Sustainable Development, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Unit has released the February 2011 edition of SIDS Newsletter. The newsletter provides a summary of key messages presented by Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Coordinator for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio 2012), to a plenary meeting of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) on 21 January 2011.

Thompson suggested that SIDS are well placed in the UNCSD process, given that a national of Barbados serves as Executive Coordinator and Ambassador John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda) is a co-chair for the UNCSD Bureau. She highlighted the need for SIDS to substantively engage in the UNCSD by giving consideration to the kind of structures necessary for SIDS to transition to a green economy, and the appropriate institutional framework that could be carried forward for international environmental governance.

The newsletter also includes articles on: supporting national preparations for the UNCSD, including new opportunities for SIDS to get involved; bringing knowledge management to the service of SIDS; moving towards SIDS preparatory meetings for the UNCSD; and the incorporation of SIDS perspectives into the Synthesis Report for the UNCSD.
