Seychelles Declares New Protected Areas
story highlights

The designation of several new protected areas in Seychelles brings 50.59 percent of all Seychelles land under legal protection, and contributes to the country's efforts to fulfill its obligations under Article 8 (In Situ Conservation) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

27 June 2011: The Seychelles Government has announced the designation of new protected areas that will result in half of all Seychelles’ land becoming protected under the law.

Following the creation of the Silhouette National Park and the Recif Island Reserve last year, which raised the total area of protected land to 47.06 percent, the recent decision resulted in protecting by law 50.59 percent of Seychelles’ land.

The new designations follow Seychelles President James Michel’s announcement in 2010 that the country will protect 50 percent of its land territory as a contribution to fulfilling its obligations under Article 8 (In Situ Conservation) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The additional protected territory also represents a contribution to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, said Ahmed Djoghlaf, CBD Executive Secretary. [CBD Press Release] [Seychelles Press Release]
