Second SOPAC Meeting Discusses Water Resources, Deep-Sea Mining

SOPAC's second meeting centered on discussions of the Regional Legislative and Regulatory Framework (RLRF) for Deep Sea Minerals Exploration and Exploitation.

The RLRF aims to ensure: that the environment is protected; that Pacific countries are prepared to meaningfully engage in this new industry; and long-term sustainable benefits for the Pacific Islands Region.

The RLRF was launched and agreed during the Pacific Islands Forum meeting in September.

SPC9 November 2012: The Second Meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Applied Geoscience and Technology Division (SOPAC) addressed deep-sea mineral deposit mining and management of the Pacific region’s fragile freshwater resources. The meeting convened from 6-9 November 2012, in Noumea, New Caledonia.

According to SPC, discussions centered on the Regional Legislative and Regulatory Framework (RLRF) for Deep Sea Minerals Exploration and Exploitation. The RLRF aims to ensure: that the environment is protected; that Pacific countries are prepared to meaningfully engage in this new industry; and long-term sustainable benefits for the Pacific Islands Region. The RLRF was launched and agreed during the Pacific Islands Forum meeting in September 2012, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

SOPAC discussions also focused on water resources management and SOPAC’s work, with the support of the EU, to develop a Graduate Certificate Programme in integrated water resources management (IWRM). [SOPAC Press Release, 9 November] [SOPAC Press Releases]
