SAICM Meeting Requests CEE Capacity-Building

The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), in collaboration with the Government of the former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia, organized the fifth Central and Eastern European (CEE) regional meeting on SAICM, in Skopje, Macedonia FYR, from 23-27 September 2013.

Key outcomes of the meeting included a request for the World Health Organization (WHO) to build capacity in the CEE report for Poison Control Centres.

SAICM7 October 2013: The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), in collaboration with the Government of the former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia, organized the fifth Central and Eastern European (CEE) regional meeting on SAICM, in Skopje, Macedonia FYR, from 23-27 September 2013. Key outcomes of the meeting included a request for the World Health Organization (WHO) to build capacity in the CEE report for Poison Control Centres.

The meeting provided an opportunity for extensive information exchange in areas that promote the achievement of the Strategic Approach 2020 goal, and a platform for developing future partnerships among key regional actors. Outcomes included: the selection of Poland’s Szymon Domagalski as the Regional Focal Point for the remainder of the term until the fourth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM 4); the identification of priority CEE Strategic Approach implementation; and a request to review synergies among the chemicals and wastes conventions from a Strategic Approach perspective.

The meeting included sessions on manufactured nanomaterials, children’s environmental health, the work of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and synergies with SAICM, lead in paint, chemicals in products and highly hazardous pesticides. In addition, Macedonia FYR provided a tour of the RadeKoncar Service facility that treats and provides temporary storage for polycyclic biphenyl (PCB)-containing transformers and waste.
