RESPONDER Event Addresses Role of ICT in Sustainability

More than 50 international specialists met in Vienna, Austria, to discuss modern information and communication technologies (ICT) to influence sustainable consumption.

The event was held in the context of the European Knowledge Brokerage project RESPONDER, an EU-funded effort to advance sustainable consumption by assessing its potential contradictions with economic growth.

22 January 2013: More than 50 international specialists met in Vienna, Austria, to discuss modern information and communication technologies (ICT) to influence sustainable consumption. The event was held in the context of the European Knowledge Brokerage project RESPONDER, an EU-funded effort to advance sustainable consumption by assessing its potential contradictions with economic growth.

“Green ICT for Sustainable Consumption?” took place on 17-18 January 2013, organized by the Institute of the Environment and Regional Development of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. The University is one of the partners in the project, which also includes the the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development, four other universities and three research institutes.

Experts from Europe, the US and Australia discussed: how ICT can increase energy and resource efficiency, and make consumption more sustainable; potential uses of ICT in the energy sector, like “Smart Metering” and “Smart Grids;” and cloud computing.
