story highlights

Martin Hiller, Director General, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), highlighted funding as a short-term challenge and said energy access will be a core area of work in the coming year.

15 Decemeber 2011: Martin Hiller, new Director-General of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), has shared his views on the Durban Climate Change Conference and his impressions of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) and the challenges it faces.

Hiller lamented the slow pace of the UNFCCC negotiations, but said the talks reflect both technical and geopolitical realities. He said REEEP employees are working to move “beyond aid to find commercial propositions that could work for people in poor and remote areas.” He said the organization has prioritized filling gaps in access to energy, but faces funding challenges in the short-term, specifically in the critical area of custom-made projects that could act as “tipping points and accelerators in clean energy development.” [REEEP Interview]
