The second meeting of the Ad hoc Open-ended Working Group on Protected Areas of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened in Rome, Italy, from 11-15 February 2008, immediately prior to the thirteenth meeting of the CBD’s Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (18-22 February 2008).

The Working Group adopted two heavily bracketed recommendations for consideration by the CBD’s ninth Conference of the Parties (COP 9, 19-30 May 2008, Bonn, Germany), on the review of implementation of the programme of work and on options for mobilizing financial resources for its implementation. Concerns were voiced with regard to the lack of full consideration of financing needs and the low level of political impetus in the context of protected areas, as well as to procedural shortcomings and the likely impact of the extensively bracketed recommendations on delegates’ workload at COP 9.
