PROFOR Newsletter Highlights Trade-offs between Mining and Forests in the Congo Basin

The Program on Forests (PROFOR) has released the eleventh issue of its newsletter, which highlights a report on managing tradeoffs in the Congo Basin in order to balance sustainable forest management (SFM) and economic growth in mining.

The publication also presents s a new PROFOR activity, ‘balancing mining development and forest conservation in the Congo Basin' aimed at generating multiple scenarios on cross-sector tradeoffs for discussion with stakeholders in the forest and mining sectors.

PROFOR3 July 2013: The Program on Forests (PROFOR) has released the eleventh issue of its newsletter, which highlights a report on managing tradeoffs in the Congo Basin in order to balance sustainable forest management (SFM) and economic growth in mining.

The publication also presents a new PROFOR activity, titled ‘Balancing mining development and forest conservation in the Congo Basin,’ which seeks to generate multiple scenarios on cross-sector tradeoffs for discussion with stakeholders in the forest and mining sectors.

Other new activities reported in the newsletter include: the launch of a regular market report on payments for ecosystem services and ecosystem markets; research on the role of the landscape approach and trees in drylands in increasing resilience in sub-Saharan Africa; an analysis of drivers and processes of forest governance reforms; and the Forest and Farm Facility coordination of collaboration among stakeholders in the forest and agricultural sectors.

Finally, the newsletter reports on PROFOR contributions to the Forests for Food Security and Nutrition conference, the dialogue on illegal logging and associated trade held on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, and the regional conference on the drivers of deforestation in the Congo Basin held by the World Bank and the Commission des Forets d’Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC).
