Preparations Underway for ABS Meetings, Nomination Requested for Co-Chair

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated a number of notifications relating to the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), including the announcement that Timothy Hodges (Canada) is no longer in a position to serve as Co-Chair of the intergovernmental process.

15 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) circulated a number of notifications relating to the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), including the announcement that Timothy Hodges (Canada) is no longer in a position to serve as Co-Chair of the intergovernmental process.

As a result, the representatives of the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) in the Bureau of the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the CBD are invited to inform the Secretariat of their recommended candidate for Co-Chair, no later than 1 June 2011.

In addition, the Secretariat announced that the first meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on ABS, convening from 6-10 June 2011, in Montreal, Canada, will be preceded by a short meeting to elect the Committee’s Bureau and one of its Co-Chairs, and agree on organizational matters. This meeting will be held on 5 June 2011.

Finally, the Secretariat circulated the list of selected experts and observers to participate in the expert meeting on the modalities of operation of the ABS Clearing-House, to be held from 11-14 April 2011, in Montreal, Canada.
