Preparations Begin for First Meeting of ABS Intergovernmental Committee

In preparation for the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing, the CBD Secretariat has invited parties to designate a focal point for the Intergovernmental Committee and to nominate two representatives from each of the UN regions to serve on its Bureau.

December 2010: In preparation for the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited parties to designate a focal point for the Committee and to nominate two representatives from each of the UN regions to serve on its Bureau.

Governments are asked to inform the CBD Executive Secretary of their designated focal points no later than 31 March 2011. The first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee is scheduled for 6-10 June 2011, and will be preceded by a one-day meeting to elect its Bureau and agree on other organizational matters. Parties are requested to consult regarding the nominating of two representatives from each of the UN regions to serve on the Bureau, and to send the nominations to the Secretariat no later than 1 May 2011. As decided upon by COP 10, Fernando Casas (Colombia) and Timothy Hodges (Canada) will serve as the Intergovernmental Committee Co-Chairs.
