PIFS Endorses Action Plan to Support Women in Decision-making Processes

Participants in a subregional consultation for Smaller Island States (SIS) discussed and endorsed the SIS Action Plan on Supporting Women's Participation in Decision-making Processes, identifying priorities for the next five years.

22 November 2010: Participants in a subregional consultation for Smaller Island States (SIS), held from 17-19 November 2010, in Nadi, Fiji, discussed and endorsed the SIS Action Plan on Supporting Women’s Participation in Decision-making Processes, identifying priorities for the next five years.

The subregional plan is expected to be tabled at the next SIS Officials and Leaders meeting for their consideration and political endorsement.

The consultation was convened by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), with support from UNIFEM’s Gender Equity in Political Governance Programme and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). It was attended by officials and NGO representatives from the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.

The meeting was part of a year-long project funded by the UNIFEM Fund for Gender Equality, with supplementary funding from the European Union. [PIFS Press release]
